White Horses of Camargue

Nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the Rhône River delta in southern France, the Camargue is a landscape of wild beauty—marshes, brine lagoons, and windswept beaches. For photographers, its most iconic residents are the legendary white horses, a semi-wild breed believed to be among the oldest in the world. These horses, born dark and turning dazzling white as they mature, have roamed these wetlands for thousands of years, developing the stamina and grace that make them so photogenic.

Capturing the white horses galloping through shallow waters, manes flying and droplets sparkling in the golden light, is an amazing experience. Their synergy with the local “gardians” (Camargue horsemen) creates images that show deep local tradition. The environment makes for some challenging shooting: muddy marshes, unpredictable weather, and the fast-paced action of the horses demand both technical skill and preparation.

The best photos are typically made during sunrise or sunset, when the light is soft and golden. However, the horses are not easily found wandering the beaches; most compelling photographs are arranged with the help of local gardians. Telephoto lenses (70-200mm, 100-400mm, or similar) let you capture action from a safe distance, while a 24-70mm lens is useful for environmental portraits. Shoot at fast shutter speeds—1/1000 sec or higher—to freeze the motion, and use apertures around f/8 for a good balance of sharpness and depth of field.
