Staying at a private podere in the Val d’Orcia feels less like a hotel stay and more like being welcomed into a your favorite Italian aunt’s home. Antonella, the proprietress of the podere, and her team provide incredible “farm-to-table” meals that make the experience truly authentic. The time that Antonella spent with us, from showing us her apiaries to explaining the mostly organic cuisine, made the experience all the more memorable.
Andrea is an exceptional workshop leader. He is a talented shooter, but his real strength lies in his knowledge, availability, and transparency. He is proactive in the field, constantly offering feedback and clearly explaining his thinking and composition processes. He doesn’t just show you where to stand; he teaches you a new way of seeing, from 16mm wide-angle street scenes to finding beauty in less than optimal weather. In the classroom, he is able to tailor instruction so that participants at every level learn new things. He clearly communicates his processing techniques, so participants are able to easily adopt them as their own.
Andrea’s partner, Sabrina, is the engine that makes the workshop run. Her sparkling personality and positive attitude are infectious. She manages the complex logistics with total ease, from picking incredible local restaurants to balancing the schedule to include enough shooting time as well as sufficient downtime. The itinerary is brilliantly paced—if you’re out late for a sunset shoot and a long dinner, the next morning’s departure is adjusted so you actually enjoy the trip.
Having both participated in, and assisted with, many workshops, I know the immense amount of hard work that goes into planning and executing a great photography expedition. Andrea and Sabrina both did a great job and provided a seamless, educational, and interesting workshop.
