My image, “Half Dome,” placed in the top 10 percent in the ViewBug “Iconic Places and Things” photography competition ahead of 14,298 other submissions.
I captured this image just before sunset with some of the best light of the day after a three-plus mile hike to a remote ridge in Yosemite National Park. While the hike was tough, the final result was worth the effort. When we started the hike, the weather was quite variable: we had no idea what kind of light we would see on Half Dome. Of course, the light makes the images, so it would either be great or not, depending on what Mother Nature dealt us. To our surprise, just as the sun was setting the clouds cleared and this wonderful, warm light spread across the scene.
Sometimes landscape images require lots of post-processing. In this case, however, Mother Nature did all the processing. While this image was enhanced slightly in Adobe Lightroom, Mother Nature really did all the hard work.

My image, “Reflections,” won the People’s Choice Award in the ViewBug “Mesmerizing Landscapes” photo challenge. The challenge featured images that show the beauty of nature. “Reflections” garnered the most votes from thousands of other photographers and was crowned People’s Choice.
After a long day of hiking and photographing, I captured the image in Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite National Park. The shape of the clouds reflected in the still water echo the shape of the far bank of the pond, providing an interesting repeating pattern. Captured near sunset in July 2015, the image looks peaceful, but swarms of mosquitos made capturing the image a little challenging. It is hard to be creative when you are swatting pesky bloodsuckers away.
My image, “Half Dome,” was featured on the ViewBug wall, ViewBug’s “front Page” that provides users with a personalized experience, completely customized to each user’s specific photography interests. According to ViewBug, only a select few images are featured in this prized location.
Thanks to artist Gwen Fuller, I was able to exhibit my images this past weekend at Silicon Valley Open Studios (SVOS). We had five artists, each specializing in a different medium—from acrylics and sculpture to jewelry and photography—arrayed through Gwen’s lovely home in Menlo Park.
Thanks to all the people who toured our studios and admired our work. And a special thanks to Mel Thomsen, executive director of SVOS, who works tirelessly every year to organize and execute this fantastic event.

On my return from a photography workshop in Cuba, my good friend and colleague, Gwen Fuller, who is a talented artist in her own right, asked me to join her in exhibiting in Silicon Valley Open Studios on Saturday, 2 May and Sunday, 3 May at 791 Stanford Avenue in Menlo Park. I am honored to be included in this annual event.
During SVOS, artists welcome guests into their private work spaces, and you can converse with the artists and purchase artworks directly. What better way to explore art than to spend some quality time in the intimate setting of an artist’s private studios? I encourage you to attend this wonderful event.
