Located in central Death Valley near Stovepipe Wells, Mesquite Flat Dunes are the best known and easiest to visit in the national park. Although the highest dune rises only about 100 feet, the dunes actually cover a vast area.
For dunes to exist, there must be a source of sand, prevailing winds to blow the sand and a place for the sand to collect. Ian Death Valley, the eroded canyons and washes provide plenty of sand, the wind seems to always blow and on Mesquite Flat the sand is “trapped” by neighboring mountains.
Mesquite Flat Dunes are most beautiful in early morning and late afternoon. This photo essay only begins to explore the sinuous shapes the dunes offer.
